General Description

These RJ45 breakout boards bring all 8 pins of a 8P8C modular jack out to screw terminal blocks for easy connection and prototyping work. Each pin is also brought to solder pads (5 per line) at 0.1" spacing, allowing easy addition of standard pin headers. Please note that the breakout boards are manufactured with a connection between each connector pin and the corresponding terminal block position; no soldering of any type is necessary. The solder pads simply provide an area for making optional connections to additional headers or other components.

This break out board is perfect for experimentation and prototype work, as well as for use in the educational laboratory. It is well-suited for work with RS-232 serial ports, data acquisition equipment, and any other device that uses an RJ45/8P8C connector. It can be helpful in making MODBUS connections. A breakout board is sometimes referred to as a "transition module", "terminal board", or "interface module".

For those working with ethernet networks, please note that this board is not CAT5 certified. However, our experience so far shows that these boards can be used on 100Mbps ethernet networks without introducing problems. As usual, the wires you connect to the breakout board's screw terminals should maintain their twist as close to the screw terminals as possible.

For mounting on a panel, we suggest the rubber feet version (-FT), 1/4" nylon standoffs under the mounting holes, and #6 screws.

Connector Style

These breakout boards are available with either a Right Angle connector or a Straight ("Vertical") connector. The terms Right Angle and Straight refer to the connector itself, NOT the relationship of the mating cable to the PCB. In fact, the cable mating to a Right Angle connector is parallel to the PCB, while the cable mating to a Straight connector is perpendicular to the PCB. These are pictured below:

DIN Rail Mount Version

These products are also available with DIN rail mounting clips for quick and convenient mounting where DIN rail is used. Product numbers ending with -DIN come with DIN clips already installed and ready to mount. The clips allow mounting on standard 35mm rail as well as 32mm rail.
