General Description
A cage nut is simply a threaded nut contained within a flexible/springy metal cage. Winford offers them to work with certain of our DIN Rail Mounting plates that have pre-milled slots to accept the cage nuts. This design allows the cage nut to be easily positioned anywhere within the slot for flexibly adapting to various device hole locations.
In other general usage, cage nuts are often installed into square cutouts in sheet metal panels that are too thin to be reliably threaded directly.
Please note that the required slot/cutout size is (unfortunately) different for the metric vs imperial cage nuts.
These nuts are sold in bags of 10.
Installation / Usage
Cage nuts must be installed on the "back side" of a panel/plate such that when a screw is tightened into them, the cage nut is being pulled towards the panel/plate, not away from it. In this way, the panel/plate itself is bearing the load, while the cage is simply retaining the nut before it is tightened.
Cage nuts are installed by squeezing the cage together and tilting/inserting into the cutout or slot in the panel/plate. Then, release the cage and it will spring back/expand to grip the cutout. A flat screwdriver or pliers can be useful to help with installation and removal. There are also tools sold specifically for this purpose, though Winford does not currently sell them.
